Goldie Clay - Bronze (Hard, Soft and Middle)

Additional Photos:

Goldie Bronze comes as a powder which is mixed with water as needed to make Bronze clay. There are three formulations of Bronze (Soft, Mid: 50/50 mix, and Hard), which can be used alone or mixed together when constituting the clay to take advantage of the benefits of each type (proportions can be adjusted to suit your project). Soft Bronze is very soft and ideal for working with stamps and textures. Hard Bronze makes a stiffer clay which shrinks slightly more than the Soft type and results in a slightly denser end product which is more suitable for bangles and rings. The Mix is for convenience.

Goldie Bronze™ is bronze of a beautiful golden color, which is very hard after firing. It comes in three types of powder – SOFT, MID and HARD. SOFT is very soft and is ideal for working with stamps and textures, and to capture fine details. HARD creates a somewhat stiffer clay to work with, and yields the maximum strength – it is ideal for bangles, ring bands, and decorative objects. If you are planning to create a piece which involves fine details and you desire the maximum strength, it is recommended to use MID version ( 50% SOFT and 50% HARD).

Goldie Bronze™ is an environmentally friendly product. It contains approximately 90% copper and 10% tin. The binders are organic and non toxic.
Goldie Bronze™ shrinks by about 8%-11% on firing, depending on the shape and the size of the piece. Dried clay can be ground up to a powder and reconstituted. Goldie Bronze™ is simple and economical to use.

Goldie Bronze Tips by Joy Funnell

Always mix the powder up really well in the tub before you start each time to ensure the binder is well distributed.

Mix Goldie Hard and Goldie Soft to a 50/50 ratio for a great all round clay. It is my favourite version. Weigh out equal quantities of each type in powder form and mix together well before adding water.

Let the clay rest for 30 minutes or so after mixing before you start to use it. This makes it much more workable.

Goldie Bronze does not stick to your hands when at the correct consistency, and it stays workable for a long time. Baby wipes work well for cleaning up edges and refining Goldie Bronze.

If the clay starts to feel a bit dry while you are working add some more water to it and then reroll it well before continuing. Rolling out the clay distributes the water evenly through it and makes it lovely and smooth to work with.

Keep unused mixed up clay in an airtight tub - no need to refrigerate.

When making larger pieces in Goldie Bronze increase the binder burn out time and the second phase firing time.

Always make a few test pieces first and work out the best firing time for you as kilns can vary.

Cindy Pankopf's Notes on Goldie Bronze (SOFT)

  • Very smooth and easy to mix
  • Marginal body as clay, a bit limp
  • A little challenging to drape clay
  • Sticks to itself well as wet clay
  • Would be good for molding
  • Moderately sturdy as greenware
  • Smooth, easy and fun to carve (it’s best feature)
  • Fantastic, brilliant colors after firing (hot pink, turquoise, blue)
  • I required a hotter firing than recommended for good sintering (1578F)
  • 90 degree bend after hotter firing, no sign of cracking/breaking

Cindy Pankopf's Notes on Goldie Bronze (HARD)

  • Very smooth and easy to mix
  • Dark flecks in powder and clay
  • Excellent body as clay (it’s best feature)
  • Clay drapes very well
  • Sticks to itself well as wet clay
  • Nice and sturdy as greenware
  • Firm but smooth and crisp for carving
  • I required a hotter firing than recommended for good sintering
  • Beautiful soft rainbow colors after firing
  • I required a hotter firing than recommended for good sintering (1578F)
  • 90 degree bend after hotter firing, no sign of cracking/breaking

Great Clay December 22, 2012

This may be my favorite bronze clay brand.
The texture is great to work with.
The best part is the easy success with  sintering. It is a short fire firing process too!  Usually when using a new brand it takes a few firings to get good sintering with the right temps etc.  This clay sintered first attemps.  It is beautiful and easy to get to the final product.
You must try this Bronze Clay!

Some difficulty, yes November 26, 2012
Reviewer: Jessica from Rochester, NY United States
This is my first time using a powdered clay, I found it very mushy the first time and the fired pieces came out porous. (get a ring wet, stays wet. not good.) However I poked around and found this blog: http://drakonaria.blogspot.com/2012/08/test-of-goldie-bronze.html Great instructions.

Rolling the clay out a lot helped the consistency a ton (you really do have to get it to be like plasticene) and I am hoping will eliminate the porous issue I had. Haven't fired this round yet.
