Stainless Steel Wire Mesh Cloth for Carbon Firing - 6" Square

Additional Photos:

Create perfectly sized rings in bronze, copper and PMC Sterling clay!  This Stainless Steel Wire Cloth is 80 x 80 mesh with a wire diameter of .0055" that makes for very tiny holes.  Perfect for protecting metal clay creations from carbon particles where the particles could find their way between two bodies thus interfering with the clay shrinkage.  The PERFECT example of this is when firing with HattieS® Patties.  Unprotected, carbon particles would sift in between the pattie and the ring shank preventing the ring to shrink down to the correct ring size.  Simply trim off a piece large enough to hand form a tent like structure before adding the last layer of carbon that should cover the protective structure.

** Mesh sold as a flat sheet**

Create a Ring Tent/Cage:

It is very important to keep the carbon granules from getting between the ring insert and the ring so they don’t inhibit proper shrinking of the ring around the insert.  To do this, make a steel mesh tent/cage to cover the ring and insert during firing.  The cage can be used over and over.  To make a ring tent/cage, follow the instructions below.

  1. Use scissors to cut a piece of 80 mesh steel screen to a square shape.  Hattie cuts it to 2.5” x 2.5” (63mm x 63mm) for her ring creation.

  2. Fold the piece diagonally and form a stiff crease. Unfold the piece and then fold the piece in the opposite diagonal direction to form another stiff crease.  The screen should now look sort of like a tent.

  3. Fold two corners together and use your fingers to form a crease on each side to create a wall.  Repeat for the other side to form a square cage with a pointed top.
Tents/cages can also be used to keep carbon out of other items during firing such as boxes or other hollow forms.
