Tapered Stainless Steel Container & Lid (Set of 3)

This stainless steel container and lid combination is the one that we used to benchmark the ability of the SFEM to fire FastFire BRONZClay and PMC Sterling Struve Test Bars (STB)*. The test bars were fired according to the schedule below. They were then bent to a 90º angle without breaking and with no blisters. Your results may vary. We have found that about a 1/4" of "head room" should be allowed between the top carbon layer and the underside of the lid. (Container lid style may vary - stainless steel or ceramic)

Recommended Starting Firing Schedule...

The following is our experience. Your results may vary depending on line voltage, ambient temperature and the varying thickness of your creations.

We fired in the SFEM™ with no temperature controller or pyrometer. We used time based firing schedules only.

Our results are based on starting from a room temperature kiln. If you experience breakage, increase the time in 5 minute increments. If you experience blistering, reduce firing time in 5 minute increments.

Remember to allow the kiln to cool to room temperature between firings. Because we are using time based firing, the starting point should be room temperature.

BRONZClay - 55 minute firing time

Put about a 1/2" of carbon in bottom of container, add your creation to the center of the container allowing at least a 1/4" between the piece and the side of the container, cover with at least a 1/2" of carbon, place lid on top and set the container in the center of kiln base. Lower the kiln onto the base. Turn on switch, run for 55 minutes, turn off and allow to cool for 20 minutes. Lift kiln off the base away from you and set the kiln on its element cover where the power cord comes in. Allow to cool to room temperature or use a tweezer to remove the piece from the carbon.

PMC Sterling - Two Steps - 60 minute firing time

Binder Firing - Place your creation on the floor of the kiln towards the middle - not in carbon. Lower the kiln onto the base. Turn on switch, run for 18 minutes, turn off and allow to cool for 20 minutes. Lift kiln off the base away from you and set the kiln on its element cover where the power cord comes in. Allow the kiln to cool to room temperature.

Sinter Firing - Put about a 1/2" of carbon in bottom of container, add your creation to the center of the container allowing at least a 1/4" between the piece and the side of the container, cover with at least a 1/2" of carbon, place lid on top and set the container in the center of kiln base. Lower the kiln onto the base. Turn on switch, run for 42 minutes, turn off and allow to cool for 20 minutes. Lift kiln off the base away from you and set the kiln on its element cover where the power cord comes in. Allow to cool to room temperature or use a tweezer to remove the piece from the carbon.

* The STB is a piece of clay that is rolled out 4 cards thick (1mm) and is 1/2" x 1-1/2" in size. As with any clay, the STB must be bone dry before using to benchmark the right timing for any given clay.

PLEASE NOTE - Being a stainless product the containers will "shed" tiny carbon flakes during firing. This effect will diminish over time as the containers are used. The particles are NOT harmful to anything and can simply be swept off the shelf into the trash with a paint brush or a dry cloth or dust vacuumed off.
